We’ve all been there before, struggling with a relationship, trying to fit in, questioning whether we are liked.  At one time or another we have all felt inadequate, not good enough and like we are not deserving.  We’re all human, and part of being human is the desire to feel loved.  Loved by the people around us, whether they are family, friends or that special someone.  But when you lack self-acceptance it is hard to realize that you are worthy.

In a culture where all we see are photoshopped images, cherry picked photos for Facebook and Instagram, it’s easy to start questioning whether you measure up to others’ expectations.  Your worth is not measured or defined by someone else’s external ruler.

So what is self-worth?

Self worth is the knowledge that you hold value, just like everyone else, but let’s not confuse self-worth with the everyone wins a trophy mentality.   Self worth is about accepting yourself the way you are, forgiving your weaknesses or flaws and knowing that they do not define you.

If you are unable to see your own worth, others will have a hard time seeing it too.  And this can lead to accepting things that are less than what we deserve – like a lower paying job, poor treatment by people around us or even feeling like we don’t matter.

Realizing your worth takes time and commitment.  It will require you to define what it is that truly matters to you, establishing clear boundaries, rewriting negative biases and self talk and letting go of judgement.

  • Practice Gratitude – finding things, big and small that you can feel grateful for helps to shift your focus from a position of lack to a position of abundance.
