The Book of Mormon and Emotional Denial
Have you had the opportunity of going to see the Book of Mormon?
There’s a scene where they sing a song called Turn It Off. It’s all about the denial and shutting down of emotions that are hard or undesirable.
What I love about this song is that it’s a lighthearted look at holding onto image over truth in a way that doesn’t allow for the raw human experience.
There’s an undercurrent in the healing and self-help industry that perpetuates a distorted application of the law of attraction.
This leads so many on a spiritual path to either give up or force it, both resulting in feelings of failure.
Today we’re going to talk about the dark side of love and light. By the end of this episode, you’ll know how to recognize toxic positivity so you can move into a more aligned and powerful place of being.
Understanding the Law of Attraction
So let’s start with the law of attraction. Simply put this spiritual law is saying that like attracts like. And in the spiritual self-help world, you are encouraged to raise your vibration to match that thing you want, so you can call it into your life.
Sounds great, right?
What most people don’t recognize is that when you have been conditioned to look for proof of concept before buying into something, the space of staying in a higher vibe state feels really unnatural.
Very few people naturally allow themselves to hold clean and clear space for their future manifestation.
Human nature is to revert back to what we know, what is comfortable, what is not perceived as risky.
Holding onto a dream, goal, or desired state of being that is so foreign to your normal experience feels really uncomfortable.
And then the pragmatic side of you will kick in reminding you that it’s not real.
The Dark Side of Love and Light
This ties directly into the sentiment of love and light. This space you’re expected to live in, to radiate from.
When human emotions come up like anger, fear, sadness, the act of sitting in love and light seems very counterintuitive.
To sit in love and light becomes a form of toxic positivity when you feel like you need to stuff the negative emotions down in order to keep up the appearance of a high vibe lifestyle.
So the card we’re going to look at is the Star in the what to release position.
Traditionally, this card is associated with hope and guidance. The holding on to the vision, the desired end result with the divine connection and spiritual guidance to get there.
There’s hopeful imagery used in the card with the two jugs, both pouring water and the water reaching the pond no matter where the water was poured.
We can’t overlook that we only see stars at night, so there’s a nod to our subconscious and the things we don’t yet see.
And that’s pretty amazing, right?
The deep down acknowledgement that everything is going to plan, that it’s all going to be okay even if we can’t see it.
Releasing Unrealistic Hope
But we can’t forget that this is in the what to release position, so this hopefulness is what is getting in the way.
As within the love and light sentiment, there is an attachment to an idealized, almost unrealistic vision of hope and healing. This asking for unrelenting optimism without space for real emotional expression.
The Star in the what to release position is asking you to examine where you may be engaging in a passive role. Where you’re holding on to hope and a prayer that it’s going to happen without acknowledging where you could step in to bring about your desired outcome.
So if you haven’t noticed this yet, there is a fine line, this dance you’re engaging in when it comes to love and light. And that’s how much is just enough hope that doesn’t fall into fruitless hoping, or the stuffing down of real human emotions.
A lot of life isn’t pretty. It can be downright dull. And if you’re measuring yourself against whether you’re happy go lucky all the time, you are going to feel fake and like an imposter.
It’s time to release the idea of being perpetually hopeful or shining like a star at all times.
There’s a difference between holding out hope and building belief.
While holding out hope is passive, building belief is an active endeavor, one that helps you attain alignment with your desired end result.
Processing Emotions and Aligned Action
Instead of stuffing down the big or heavy emotions and creating energetic blocks, you process the emotions that are really indicators of where there is a mismatch in your inward and outward experience.
You can go back and listen to the episode on how to process emotions because there’s a lot of good stuff in there.
But as long as the emotions are sitting in your body, whether you’re aware of them or not, they create blocks for the very thing you want to experience, and that’s more alignment, more happiness, more joy in your life.
I talk to my clients about aligned action all the time: the taking steps from a place of deep, cognitive and emotional ownership.
It’s this aligned action that allows you to feel more at ease along the journey when things aren’t going the way you want them to, or you find yourself overwhelmed.
Striving for love and light when it’s not in alignment with where you are, what you still need to process is the epitome of the patriarchy telling you to be small, not make noise, grin, and bear it, put your head down, work hard, wait for your return, to smile more because you’d be much prettier.
Throughout history people in many cultures have been discouraged from expressing emotions, especially ones that make other people uncomfortable, like sadness, anger, and grief.
As a parent of three kids, I get how complicated navigating the emotions of other people can be. But what I do know from my upbringing, coupled with my education, is that it’s way better to process your emotions than it is to stuff them down and ignore them.
It’s what allows you to stay in a grounded reality and helps you stay rooted in the process of healing and your journey.
Hematite: The Grounding Stone
I am going to offer Hematite as the crystal to work with when dealing with the dark side of love and light, and here’s why.
Hematite is a grounding stone that helps to anchor you back into the present moment. When you’re faced with toxic positivity and the pressure to maintain an idealized image of high vibe, Hematite will provide much needed balance.
This crystal can help you distinguish between genuinely uplifting optimism and the kind of forced positivity that is common with spiritual bypassing. Hematite helps to create a sense of safety within your own body and empowers you to feel all your emotions.
Hematite provides stability, helping you process heavy emotions, and clarity that supports the necessary shift from passive hoping to active belief building. Your aligned action will come from a place of grounded awareness rather than from a place of pretending everything is fine.
The protective aspect of Hematite will be comforting as you explore and navigate the heavy and uncomfortable emotions, helping you to stay centered and avoid feeling overwhelmed. It will support you in holding space for your emotions without letting them dictate your actions or wellbeing.
