So far, my work space for Three Charmed Gems has been made up of repurposed furniture from around the house.  I’m fortunate that I have been able to claim one of our bedrooms as my “sanctuary”.  But with ineffective storage and a desk that is not meant for rough and tumble work, my use of time is spent searching for things and moving things around so that I can actually try to create something.  It’s gotten old.  It’s time to start creating creative space.

My collection of beads, while small by some standards, is growing.  And as more beads make it into the collection, it’s easy to forget what I have.  Especially when they get buried under something else, or shoved in a box that isn’t transparent. Obviously I need to be able to see what I have.  For now, I’m mostly using overflow plastic GLAD containers or containers from the grocery store.

One thing that is constant is change.  I get bored and move things.  So movable furniture is a must.  And there might come a day when Thing 1 and Thing 3 will want to have their own rooms, so this space may not always be mine.  Sob…

The work surface needs to wear many hats.  Somewhere to research, somewhere to bead and create, somewhere to take pictures, and somewhere for the computer.  And tools and supplies close at hand.  And no digging or moving things around to accomplish these things.  That’s one tall order!

Hours have been spent ogling other beautiful craft rooms on Pinterest.  There are a whole lot of gorgeous craft rooms out there, but now I need to come back to reality.  The reality that my space isn’t huge, and it still needs to function for more than just my work.  It’s where I meditate, so it needs to be “empty”.  And as much as I use the room, the closets are used for blankets and off-season clothes.

So, what to do for creating creative space?  A trip to IKEA!  The Things were able to have fun in Smaland while DH and I strolled leisurely through the showroom.  Imagine that, a leisurely stroll through IKEA!?

I opted to go for the Bjorkudden, a solid birch dining table.  That should hold up to some hammering and banging.

And an Alex Drawer Unit on casters.  The drawers are shallow so nothing will be piled on top of something else.  The casters  allow me to move it around the room in search of the best spot for lighting when taking pictures.

Before started creating creative space I repurposed a side board we had in the basement with ample shelving and lots of space to put finished products.

And my favourite chair in the house for reading.

And that is how I go about creating creative space.
